UL vs IEC Enclosure Standards: What Export Buyers Need to Know

UL is the North American system; IEC (and its EN adoption) is the international one. A box built to IEC is not automatically UL-listed, and NEMA does not map cleanly onto IP. For export you match the standard to the market — and the same enclosure platform can usually be certified for either.

UL = North America

US and Canada recognise UL listing. It is a regional system with its own test methods and follow-up inspection.

IEC = international

Used across the EU and most of the world, adopted nationally as EN/IEC. CE marking rests on IEC-based standards.

NEMA vs IP

Both rate protection but on different scales; NEMA also covers corrosion and ice. Use a conversion table, not a guess.

Reference

The standards that actually apply

Buyers often ask for 'UL approved' or 'IEC compliant' without a number. The number decides the test. These are the ones we see most on enclosure and assembly drawings.

ScopeNorth AmericaInternational / EU

ICT / AV equipmentUL 62368-1IEC 62368-1

The same IEC 62368-1 is harmonised with UL 62368-1, so some product safety standards now align — but enclosure and assembly standards still differ by region.

Export

One enclosure platform, two markets

For an export buyer the cheapest path is a platform that can be certified either way: build to IEC 62208 / 61439 as the baseline, keep the documentation, and add UL evaluation for the North American version. We design the box so the difference is certification and finishes, not a new tooling programme.

Write the standard, not the buzzword

'UL approved' with no number sends the job back to engineering. State the market, the standard and the rating together:

  • Europe: CE, EN 62208, IEC 61439-1/-2
  • USA/Canada: UL 508A, NEMA 4X
  • IP or NEMA rating for the environment
  • Short-circuit rating and finish when relevant
