NEMA ↔ IP Rating Cross-Reference Tool

Convert between NEMA enclosure types and IEC 60529 IP codes. Pick a NEMA type to see its approximate IP equivalent, or enter an IP code to see the NEMA types that match. The mapping is approximate — NEMA also covers corrosion, ice and construction that IP does not.

NEMA type → IP (approx.)

IP66approx IP

IP code → NEMA (approx.)

NEMA 4X / 6approx NEMA

IP66 = dust-tight, powerful water jet.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Approximate mapping for enclosure selection — confirm against IEC 60529 and NEMA 250, and the supplier's tested rating, before release.

NEMA 12KIP54Indoor, dust and dripping/oiling with hose test.
NEMA 13IP54Indoor, dust, spray and oil.
Why approximate

NEMA and IP measure different things

NEMA (NEMA 250) covers ingress plus corrosion, ice formation and construction; IP (IEC 60529) covers solids and water only. A NEMA 4X enclosure is roughly IP66 but also corrosion-rated, which IP does not express. Always confirm the supplier's tested rating for your site.

  • IP = solids + water (IEC 60529)
  • NEMA = ingress + corrosion + ice (NEMA 250)
  • Use both when exporting

FAQ

NEMA and IP questions

A NEMA 4X enclosure is approximately IP66: dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets, and it is also corrosion resistant. IP does not express the corrosion rating, so confirm the supplier's tested rating for a coastal or washdown site.

No. NEMA 250 covers ingress plus corrosion, ice and construction; IEC 60529 IP covers solids and water only. The mapping here is approximate for selection, not a substitution for the supplier's tested rating.

Outdoor under cover commonly starts at IP65; exposed or hosed sites use IP66. Use the IP rating selector to confirm from the actual site, then specify the gasket and door seal that deliver it.

Approximately. IP67 (temporary immersion) maps to about NEMA 6, and IP68 to NEMA 6P. Again, NEMA also covers ice and corrosion that IP does not, so match the full environment, not just the digits.
